MM&J has been retained to defend maritime accident claims for
personal injuries and wrongful death involving private sport fishing
boats, commercial fishing boats, shipyards, fish spotting helicopters
onboard tuna seiners, marina recreation areas and county harbor
agencies. We have significant expertise in general maritime law,
the Jones Act and the Death on the High Seas Act. We have been
engaged in cases involving naval architects, marine engineers, tuna
boat fish captains, deck bosses, crewmembers, owners, and
marine accountants. The challenges and need for experienced
counsel in the defense of maritime law cases is shown, by example,
in a case defended by Jim Michaelis involving a wrongful death
claim brought against a Singapore shipyard. The case arose when
a swivel pin in the king post failed on the high seas, causing a boom
collapse and knocking a European crewman overboard to his
death. Jim Michaelis is an Associate Member of The Maritime Law
Association of the United States.
