
A member of the California State Bar since 1966, Jim is rated “AV
Preeminent 5.0" by Martindale-Hubbell.
A founding partner of Michaelis, Montanari & Johnson, Jim obtained a
Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Stanford University in
1962. Attending Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California,
Berkeley, he graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Laws degree.
Jim was a Captain in the United States Army. For two years, he was
stationed in West Germany. He began the practice of law as a Deputy
District Attorney in Sacramento, California, gaining extensive jury trial
experience. After learning stints in prominent civil practice firms, Jim started
his own firm in 1978 under the name of Hart & Michaelis, which became
Michaelis, Montanari & Johnson in 1984.
Specializing in products liability, aviation and space law, Jim represented
Certain Underwriters of Lloyd’s of London against SPACEHAB arising out
of the Space Shuttle Columbia accident of 2003.
Jim is a member of the Environmental Law Section of the State Bar of
California, the Defense Research Institute and the Association of Southern
California Defense Counsel. He is a past-President of the Los Angeles
Chapter of the Aviation Insurance Association.
In 1977, Jim obtained a single engine land private pilot certificate from the
FAA. He is an avid, non-technical mountain climber. He has reached the
summit of Mts. Rainier, Hood, Shasta, Langley and Whitney.
